Workshop outline

Saturday 7th September, 2024, 09:00 - 15:00

Simon will teach you tips and skills for throwing off the hump, discuss his thoughts on form and surface, push you to fully engage with the potters wheel and explore beyond the boudries of round, thrown pots.

Sunday 8th September, 2024, 09:00 - 15:00

Ann Marie will then guide you through designing and building your own vessels using her decorative coil technique, including a demonstration of how Ann Marie trims and finishes the rims of her pieces.

Simon will help you finish your pieces made on the first day. Adding handles and trimming pots in ways that aesthetically complement and resolve the work.

Simon and Ann Marie will each present an artist talk featuring images of their work and a discussion on what drives their practise.

The workshop will finish with an open forum where you can ask questions of Simon and Ann Marie on any topic from the small batch mentoring program they run, Cohorts.Art to kilns, clay, wood firing, soda firing, working with galleries and shipping pots.

Simon Levin has been working in clay since 1990. Simon has dedicated his life to being a full-time studio potter working almost exclusively with wood firing. An MFA recipient from the University of Iowa, Simon exhibits, teaches, builds kilns, and is published internationally.  In 2013 he was a Senior Fulbright Scholar in Taiwan.  Between 2004 and 2023 his apprenticeship program has trained 24 potters.  He hosts a video series on the Ceramics Arts Network, where he brings dialogue to process. Formerly Director at Large for the National Council for Education of the Ceramic Arts (NCECA), and the founder of Cohorts.Art (a small batch mentorship program), Simon seeks every day to advance the frontiers of clay, and evangelise for this empowering material. Ann Marie Cooper is a gallerist and studio potter in Bellingham, Washington. After taking a job at Good Earth Pottery gallery in 2009, clay and its spirited community became pivotal in her life. She now owns that gallery, teaches classes, leads soda and wood firings, has her work included in several books, and manages Cohorts.Art. In her studio, Ann Marie specialises in coil-built ceramics, driven by the desire to create surfaces that delight the eye and invite touch by incorporating the decorative and textural elements into the body of a piece. She prefers to finish her work in soda and wood-fired kilns for both the unique effects created by fire and ash, as well as the shared community experiences.
